Pretty name, not so pretty results. It does not seem too long ago when I was writing about the price of living in paradise. Less than 2 months since that horror story, nature dished out another one. This time it was like a true horror movie considering that the storm made landfall during the wee hours of Monday morning. I was up and standing by the side of my huge sliding door watching out and I saw for the first time in my life a green lightning. It was spooky as hell. It felt like being possessed by nature. I was scared to my spine until the comforting first rays of sun showed up. From then on, it felt instantly better even though the storm had not come close to subsiding. I got a chance to call up people to say I was fine until the cell phone signal started to fade away. I then got out to the balcony to take pictures and videos which will be posted very soon (when power comes back at home).

.: From Chettinad to Harvard…..

Anantha | 10/2/2005

I received a email from a friend of mine asking me to post this for the masses. These are not my views and the original author can be emailed at parthi@vt.edu. It has been edited ever so little to convey the crux of the matter better.

“We invite the US to be a part of an amazing phenomenon called INDIA” announced Palaniappan Chidambaram, the Indian Finance Minister.

” I cannot sleep rite now after watching a nice one hour interview of P.Chidambarm in the Charlie Rose show in the PBS TV channel late in the midnight . It takes a statesman like P.Chidambaram to stun an interviewer like Charlie Rose. It was a great compilation of numbers and data about the stupendous growth happening in India by the FM. Only a highly sophisticated individual can handle those questions swiftly and leave no room for the interviewer to take hold of the event. “I learnt these experience while working in trade union” said the Harvard educated business graduate. It was astonishing that he practised law in India after an MBA from Harvard. More interesting is the fact that he started as a lower end political worker in Tamil Nadu Congress, inspite of hailing from one of the richest families in Tamil Nadu.

He had answers for every query from Rose. He was amazing!!!!! I am lost for words. He talked about everything, gains and losses of India and what not?. “We need to direct money into Education, Infrastructure, Sanitation and basic health to sustain a 7-8% growth for the next two decades to become third largest economic power ” added the father of VDIS. He did not fail to mention about the soaring oil prices to $75 per barrel and compared with the colonial rule in last century. He rather commented the prices as “outrageous” and said that it would only lead to impoverishment in developing countries. He was positive about the financial infrastructure of India. He never seemed to be complacent about the present growth and fully aware of the fact that further investment is needed particularly in infrastructure and health care. He answered very cleverly the questions regarding the stance of India with Iran’s nuclear policy unlike some other central ministers who linked the stance with the Muslim population in India. “India is a democracy” cited the FM when asked about the left’s views about liberation of economy. It was courage was the comment on the present PM’s decision to open the economy in 1991. I felt he missed nothing about the factors which had, would and will impact on India’s growth and economy.

” US should lead as an example to other countries to accept India’s candidature in UNSC” said the man from Chettinad to conclude the show. It was more an appeal that he made that an average American should think about the reality and should know that by denying India a seat in UN’s security council would be neglecting one in seventh of humanity.”
