.: Simply Perfect

by Anantha on October 7, 2004

Strictly for people who have steady hands and a lot of time, commonly known as graduate students

This was on my mind for a long time, to try and balance two circular objects on top of one another and I did it !!!! Yeah, it did take 45 mins of concentration and no movement (not even vibrations/sound/walking/heavy breathing etc. etc.). The supporting object is a tennis ball and the object on the top is a circular rubber globe that I picked up as a freebie. These are the kind of things that really make you happy, the centroid of the bottom object and the top object on the same line and hence, the perfect balance.

I guess simply aligning the centroids of the two objects is not the reason for this ‘perfect balance’. There is a third object involved in this case - the floor/carpet.

My 2 cents :)

Well, it just eased my problems a little bit because I did not have to concentrate too hard on trying to prevent the bottom ball from moving, also the top ball being a lighter than the bottom ball did help too.
But it is only because of the centroid alignment that they managed to stay the way they are.
And all you non-believers , no glue used :D

And to add, my record were influenced by this and this.
